The level of hazard is dependent upon the process for which the catalysts were used, for example catalysts from margarine production are classified as flammable, however some catalysts used from oil refining and chemical manufacture may be self-heating (exothermic or pyrophoric) when exposed to air, and those from other processes may be contaminated by poisons, such as sulphur or mercury. |

Some
spent nickel catalysts contain cancer-causing nickel oxide and others
may contain nickel sulphide or other “nasties” that must be
handled correctly.
