The level of hazard is dependent upon the process for which the catalysts were used, for example catalysts from margarine production are classified as flammable, however some catalysts used from oil refining and chemical manufacture may be self-heating (exothermic or pyrophoric) when exposed to air, and those from other processes may be contaminated by poisons, such as sulfur or mercury.

Some spent nickel catalysts contain cancer-causing nickel oxide and others may contain nickel sulfide or other “nasties” that must be handled correctly.
As well as affecting the purity of the recycled metal, if the dangerous substances are not handled safely it could create a problem for recycling and pose a threat to the workers at the recycling plant or the wider environment, so if there are any contaminants in the waste, we must be informed prior to its shipment so that these contaminants can be dealt with in the safest way possible.
